OSI Food Solutions Growth and Evolution

OSI Food Solutions humble beginning began in 1909 when a German immigrant named Otto Koischowsky opened a family meat market in Illinois two years after his arrival in the United States. Otto expanded the company into the wholesale meat trade in 1917. They officially became known as Otto & Sons in 1928. Otto & Sons established a reputation for offering quality meats and became the ground beef patty supplier for the first McDonalds in 1955. In 1975, the name was changed to OSI Industries.

OSI Food Solutions has grown into one of the largest meat processors servicing the retail and food service industries, with 65 facilities worldwide and employing over 20,000 people. Products include meat patties, bacon, hot dogs, fish, poultry, and more.

In 2016, OSI Food Solutions UK was one of only 18 companies worldwide presented with the Globe of Honour. This award is given to organizations who have achieved excellence in environmental management. OSI strives to provide the best possible product and of top quality, so it is no surprise that they are well known for their demanding and high standards from their food vendors. They also won this award in 2013 and 2015.

In response to the growing demand for chicken products in Spain, OSI Food Solutions Spain added a high capacity production line in 2017 that has increased its processed chicken production capacity from 12,000 tons to 24,000 tons per year. This expansion will allow for the addition of new products, more jobs, and the new equipment has already reduced electricity consumption by 20%.

OSI is constantly growing and evolving. OSI recently acquired the 60-year old Dutch company Baho Food, a manufacturer of convenience foods, deli meats, and snacks. They also acquired the Flagship Europe which supplies the UK foodservice market, and also purchased the former Tyson food plant in Chicago, Illinois, saving most of its 480 jobs. It is easy to understand how this company is now among the top 100 food companies in America.

The Compute Life of Serge Belamant

Serge Belamant was born in France in 1953, moving to South Africa with his family when he was 14. There he attended the Highlands North High School for Boys. After graduating high school he began studying engineering at Witwatersand University, switching his concentration to computer science and applied mathematics during his second year. He then switched again to studying information systems at UNISA. He never completed his degree, but instead jumped into professional life. His first professional position was with Matrix, an engineering firm.

Here Serge Belamant worked on various kinds of computer applications, including IBM computers. The Centre for Scientific and Industrial Research then made him the head of its computer section. At this time he also assisted Control Data with various engineering work for IBM, UNIVAC, BURROUGHS, ICL Could code in FORTRAN, COBOL, PL1, and PASCAL. Control Data was so impressed with his assistance for this one-time gig that they offered him a full-time analyst position which he accepted. In 1980 he was honored as analyst of the year.

Serge Belamant was later trained in linear and non-linear programming by the RSA military. He then created the world’s first scientifically driven financial system. As a result of his groundbreaking work, he was awarded full membership into the RSA computer society. He then began assisting in implementing his patented technology for use in banks. This work was done on behalf of SASWITCH. It was so successful that by the late 90s it was the most successful ATM company in the world. In 1989, Belamant greatly updated this with a newly patented technology now recognized as the first cryptocurrency technology.

It was not used by SASWITCH, so Serge Belamant started his own company known as Net1 in which he churned out this technology for bank ATM use. It has since become so successful that now takes in one or two billion dollars a year.
